Senior Football Championship

What a difference a week makes, last week no pitches, bad weather, this week sun and pitches to play on, and that is exactly what it was in Ardfinnan when we played Ballyporeen in the first round of the senior football championship, like dogs out of the traps, this game burst into life from the whistle and would continue to be a fast game all through the half, two points in as many minutes from Dean Lonergan got Cahir off to the perfect start, scores were exchanged for the next twenty minutes or so, but on twenty two minutes the first green flag of the game was raised by Ballyporeen, a quick free taken found a spare man and goal scored, Cahir popped over another couple of points to leave it all square at the break Cahir 0-10 Ballyporeen 1-07, Cahir lead out by vice-captain Sean O' Connor (pictured below) for the second half against the wind, it would be Ballyporeen who would change the score board first with three unanswered points which must be said all came from frees, our young men had a couple of goal chances but unfortunately couldn't convert, but as the saying goes third time lucky, Cahir did get that goal through Stephen Grogan and it was all square again, with seventeen minutes left Ballyporeen got a black card, but they still managed to get scores, with ten minutes to go our opponents got their second goal which left our team three behind, the clock ticking down an even younger looking Cahir side started to drift away from this game and with yet more frees awarded against the men in the green and white, they were punished, with a couple of minutes to go Ballyporeen got their third goal to put the contest beyond our spirited young team, the final score Cahir 1-12 Ballyporeen 3-16, with so many frees and a young but developing team, Cahir found the last ten minutes hard going to stay in this game, we must thank all the panel and management for the work over the winter months, and remember guys this was only the first round, plenty more to go, full team and scorers: Keelan Hickey, Liam Howard, Ger Hally, Kieran O'Dwyer (0-1), Darragh Howard, Sean O'Connor, Brian McKenna, Niall McKenna, Conor Cashman, Conor Casey, Mikey O'Connor (0-2), Dylan Fitzgerald, Dean Lonergan (0-4), Liam Casey (0-5), Stephen Grogan (1-0). Subs Used: Patrick Meehan, Colin McEniry, Ger Quinn, Ryan O'Donnell, Conor O'Brien, Alan O'Connor
