Cahir Park AFC Notes

With the weather taking its toll on a lot of fixtures in South Tipperary last weekend the investment made in our Astro Pitch is coming into its own these last few months and none more than this week. We hosted many of our own matches plus ETP games and other training sessions and games. Great to see the club members still getting out to play in the inclement weather.

TSSDL U16 Premier League

Cahir Park 5

Peake Villa 2

As we get towards the end of the league season three teams, Peake Villa, Clonmel Town and Cahir Park were within 3 points of each other at the top of the table, Cahir Park with a single game in hand on the others.

Knowing only a win would keep their season alive, Villa started very quickly and after only 3 minutes took the lead through a well taken goal by Kevin Pattan. Cahir eventually settled at the back with the faultless Oisin Brennan calming the home defence. Cahir were awarded a free kick some 25 metres out from goal. David Brannigan quickly took the kick catching the Villa keeper flat footed and found the net with only 5 minutes on the clock.

Both teams pressed with most of the action in midfield, Cahir were starting to get on top with Rhys Byron beating a number of players before narrowly shooting wide and the same player being put through by David Murphy found the Villa keeper inspired in goal to deny him. During a sustained Cahir spell a long ball out of defence saw Villa on 25 minutes awarded a penalty when the onrushing Cahir keeper was adjudged to have made contact with the Villa striker and a penalty awarded. Pattan stepped up and coolly placed his kick down the middle to put his side 2 - 1 up and despite a lot of endeavour from The Park this is how the half ended.

The second half saw The Park take control with David Murphy and Tommy McDonagh in midfield driving their team forward from the start. 6 minutes in, Rhys O'Regan, a threat all day, scored a brilliant individual goal with a left footed shot from the edge of the penalty area into the right hand corner of the net to bring the sides level. Cahir Park kept pressing for the winner and with only 19 minutes remaining got their noses in front with a great piece of individual skill from Rhys Byron, having beaten 3 players powerfully shooting home. On 76 minutes David Brannigan made sure of the points when he bent his free kick around the wall and away from the despairing reach of the Villa keeper. A long range free kick from the same player was somehow mishandled by the Villa keeper into the net, giving Brannigan his hat trick and a final scoreline of 5 - 2.

This was a very tight game that was very finely balanced throughout. Either side could easily have come out on top and the final score line somewhat flattering the home team.

The result sees Clonmel Town and Cahir Park both with 2 games left at the top of the table, both of the Park games being tough away assignments.

Our Youths had a good win at home to Cleirihan on Saturday last. The game was played on the astro pitch and the lads put in a great performance and came away with the three points. Well done to all involved.
