“Clogheen Pre-School threatened by Tusla funding cut,” McGrath

Independent TD Mattie McGrath has asked the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs James Reilly to directly intervene with Tusla, the Child and Family Agency in a bid to remove an immediate threat to the existence of Clogheen Community Pre-School. Deputy McGrath was speaking after the Childcare Supervisor at the Pre-School informed him that Tusla is set to reduce its funding by over €5000; essentially making the Pre-School unsustainable:

“The staff at Clogheen Community Pre-School are desperately worried about the savage nature of this cut and what it means for the families and children directly affected.

A cut of over €5000 to its Section 39 grant seems particularly unjustifiable and cruel in light of the fact that this Minister and his government would have us believe they have provided for an investment of an additional €85 million in early years education and care.

This is also despite the fact that Tusla, when they informed the Pre-School of the impending cut admitted that they are facing ‘considerable challenges in meeting financial targets'.

Which is it? Is it extra millions in resources as the Government say or is it Tusla's claim that they are struggling to meet costs?

What this goes to prove once again, is that we cannot believe a word out of Fine Gael or Labour's mouth.

They say they all for increasing pre-school supports and early education and yet they are willing to critically undermine a vital community service like Clogheen Community Pre-School,” concluded Deputy McGrath.
