NEW SPEED LIMITS SET TO COME INTO PLACE THIS FEBRUARY

On the 7th of February 2025 Ireland is introducing the first of its changes to speed limits across the country in an effort to improve road safety and reduce emissions. The new limits will affect both urban and rural areas, with the government focusing on areas around towns, cities, and major roads. Rural roads will be the first to see changes with a decrease from 80km per hour to 60km per hour, aimed at making streets safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

This change is in line with the government's "Safe Streets" initiative, which aims to reduce road fatalities and create safer environments for all road users.

On national roads and motorways, speed limits will largely remain the same, although there may be increased use of variable speed limits based on traffic conditions.

The changes are also part of Ireland's broader efforts to tackle climate change. Slower speeds are not only expected to reduce road collisions but also help lower vehicle emissions, contributing to national targets to reduce carbon output.
