Local Filmmaker Ailill Martin Highlights Gaelic Handball in New TG4 Documentary

Cahir native Ailill Martin, a filmmaker known for his visually engaging and thought-provoking documentaries, is bringing Gaelic Handball back into focus with his latest work, Hit the Wall.

The documentary, which explores the world of Gaelic Handball, will air on TG4 this Sunday, January 5th, at 5:40 pm. Hit the Wall takes a closer look at a sport that was once a vibrant part of Irish life but has seen its popularity decline in recent years. The film highlights the dedication of its players and the cultural significance of the game in modern Ireland.

For Ailill, this project is personal. Growing up on his family's farm in Ballydrehid, just outside of Cahir, he developed a passion for telling stories from less-explored parts of Irish society. "I enjoy submerging myself in niche subcultures in order to tell their stories in the truest way possible," Ailill explains. His previous works have often focused on unique aspects of Irish life, and Hit the Wall continues that tradition.

The documentary was supported by Creative Ireland through Tipperary County Council and GAA Handball, ensuring the sport's history and legacy are well-represented. Featuring contributions from top players like Conor McElduff, Paul Brady, Caitríona Casey, and others, Hit the Wall offers a glimpse into the lives of those who remain deeply committed to Gaelic Handball.

Ailill's work is gaining recognition. His next project, The Good Farmer and the Failed Son, has been selected by Netflix as part of its Short Documentary Talent Program 2025. This new film, currently in production, is set for release in the summer of 2025, with updates available on his Instagram (@ailillmartin).

Reflecting on his roots, Ailill says, "I grew up on a farm in Ballydrehid and went to school in the Coláiste. I also played soccer in Cahir Park for a few years and represented the school in soccer and rugby. These experiences in Cahir have shaped the stories I want to tell."
