Harry Gleesons remains were finally returned to Tipperary 83 years after his wrongful execution for murder

In 1940, Gleeson discovered the body of Mary “Moll” McCarthy in a field on his uncle's farm in New Inn, Co Tipperary, and was convicted of her murder the following year. He was executed in April 1941 at the age of 38.

Gleeson, a well-known hurler and fiddle player, received a posthumous pardon from the State in 2015. Last week, the Department of Justice confirmed to Gleeson's family that his remains had been identified in a burial area within Mountjoy Prison. On Friday, the family traveled to Mountjoy to bring him back to Galbertstown, where he grew up.

Today, thousands attended his funeral mass at Holy Cross Abbey, and he was laid to rest in an adjacent cemetery, finally recognised as an innocent man.
