St. Mary’s Parish International Team in Cahir, Co.Tipperary was set up in November 2013 to look at the needs of immigrants in the Parish.
As well as welcoming and pastoral-type activities, they have a particular interest in education and in March of 2014 set up a Fáilte Isteach Group which offers free English language classes to immigrants. Classes are held weekly and each tutor takes the same group of students each week. The classes are mainly for adults but they also offer them to children of parents attending the classes. They have a committed group of ten tutors and also the assistance of Transition Year Students from Coláiste Dun Iascaigh to help in this initiative.
St. Mary’s Parish International Team were the recipients of a library worth €1,500 in October 2014 as part of the Bord Gáis Energy Donate a Library initiative. They were one of seven community groups to receive a library through this initiative in 2014.
Developed to help promote books and reading in local communities, Bord Gáis Energy’s Donate a Library initiative gives the general public an opportunity to help make a real difference to their local community and nominate a local group to receive a library. Nominations are judged by Gert Ackerman from charity advocacy group The Wheel and TV3 Ireland AM presenter, Sinead Desmond.
Fidelma Nugent, of St. Mary’s Parish International Team, said, “We are so thrilled to have been selected to receive our own library through Bord Gáis Energy’s Donate a Library programme. We think it will make such a difference to the people who use our facilities and we hope to expand the library over the years to come.”
