Deputation to meeting Minister Shane Ross, TD to discuss Ardfinnan Bridge – Lonergan/McGrath
A deputation from Tipperary will meet with Minister Shane Ross, TD, Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport in the Ministers Office, Leinster House tomorrow, Monday 21st August in relation to Ardfinnan Bridge. The deputation which was arranged and facilitated and will be led by local Independent TD, Mattie McGrath will discuss Tipperary County Councils application to Minister Ross in relation Ardfinnan Bridge and pedestrian safety issues. With over two years, temporary traffic lights and a one way system has operating on the bridge which is on a regional route to the dismay of locals and the general public. Strong criticism has come from both Deputy McGrath and Cllr. Martin Lonergan in relation to the County Councils approach to this issue. The Director of Services for Roads and Transportation within County Tipperary has rejected such a meeting and has refused to send representatives from the Council too it! Commenting on the meeting Cllr. Martin Lonergan said, “Despite requests to Mr Marcus O'Conner, Director of Services to attend and provide details and costings of Tipperary County Councils proposals for the bridge and requests for details of reports into meetings with the National Monument Services, all have been refused. As a representative of the public, I find this evasive and shocking to say the least. We travel to Dublin with the best interests of the commuters and those in the Ardfinnan Region and surrounding areas to secure the best possible outcome from the Department, but Tipperary County Councils refusal to engage is intolerable.” According to both Deputy McGrath and Cllr. Lonergan, three options have been proposed to the Minister, Tipperary County Council Plan's for traffic lights, a cantilever pedestrian bridge and a standalone pedestrian bridge over the River Suir at Ardfinnan.
