Work to commence on the repair of Newcastle Bridge – McGrath/Lonergan

Independent TD, Mattie McGrath and Independent Councillor Martin Lonergan have welcomed the confirmation that works to repair two of the arches on Newcastle Bridge will commence within the next few weeks.

According to both Public Representatives, an application has been made to the Department of Transport, Tourism & Sport for an allocation of €26,633 for immediate works on this bridge which has been secured. This allocation being the amount under-spent on other projects in the county and will be redirected for this particular project.

Commenting on the news Deputy McGrath said, “This will remedy two of the arches which are in most need of repair and I am advised that the work will commence within the next few weeks.

Both Cllr Lonergan and I are also advised that tender documentation has been prepared for the procurement of a contractor to remove vegetation and other debris from the bridge arches and will be advertised shortly. This work may, or may not, be done within the current year as it will depend on the tender prices received.

However, I am concerned that there will be no work carried out on the approach isles to the bridge located on the Knocklofty Road this year. I have urged the Local Authority to make an urgent application for funding for this part of the project to the Department of Transport and should it be successful, the work can be carried out circa quarter three in 2017.”
