Mountain Lodge, Glengarra Wood Open Day

Burncourt Community Council held an open day yesterday at Glengarra Lodge. It was a wonderful success, so many people walk in the vicinity of The Lodge and have never seen the inside of it, so with a lovely cup of tea and some cakes they got to enjoy what must be one of the most beautiful buildings in the area. At the moment the Lodge is a conservation and restoration project.

It was built as a shooting lodge for the first Viscount Lismore, Cornelius O' Callaghan. It is located in Glengarra Woods on land which once formed part of the Shanbally Castle estate in the townland of Cullenagh.

It is a protected structure and is also included in the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage. The building's design and proportions are of high architectural merit, with the circular drawing room and round bay to the south of the house a feature which is found in other works by its architect John Nash.
