Acting Government totally out of touch by realities faced by those who suffer from Mental Health Issues – Cllr. Martin Lonergan
Independent County Councillor for Clonmel Borough District, Martin Lonergan has severely criticised the move by acting Minister for Health Leo Varadkar to raid the Mental Health Budget and remove funds out of it. Commenting on the move Councillor Lonergan said, “In a truly shocking move that once again shows the contempt that this caretaker government has for the most vulnerable in society, acting Minister for Health Leo Varadkar has confirmed that he'll be raiding the mental health budget and removing funds out of it this year. The original budget of €35m allocated for this year will now be slashed by over a third. According to the Acting Minister, he is taking the money because funds earmarked for new staff will now not be spent after all. He has not confirmed what the funds will be used for instead, but did say that the monies will be put back next year.” Concluding Cllr Lonergan added, “I have been left totally aghast at this move, which will severely deplete the mental health budget this year, leading to yet more cutbacks and misery for those most vulnerable. This is absolutely deplorable and is indicative of a government that is out of touch by the realities faced by so many who suffer from mental health issues."
