“Funding immediately needed to repair Ardfinnan Bridge” – Lonergan

Independent Local County Councillor for Clonmel/Cahir Borough District, Martin Lonergan is calling on the Acting Minister for Transport, Pascal Donoghue, TD and Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) to immediately provide emergency funding to Tipperary County Council to allow them carry out extensive remedial works on the road bridge in Ardfinnan village.

His call comes after this month marks seventh month that a one way traffic light system has operated on the bridge after a number of defects were found in late Summer 2015.

“This remarkably long bridge striding across the River Suir in the village is a notable feature of Ardfinnan Village and the surrounding countryside and steeped in history. While I acknowledge the complexities of the current monitory situation in the County and indeed nationally, it is important that it is given all the protection it requires and as soon as possible.

Also, while necessary, the current traffic management situation which has continued now since September, 2015 is a source of major inconvenience to local traffic. And as the bridge accommodates the R665 road, which in its own right is an extremely busy regional road, the full reopening of the bridge now needs to be a priority,” commented Cllr. Lonergan.

I want thank the Local General Services Supervisor, his staff, the Acting Area Engineer and Senior Engineers for prioritising this with the Department. However, while still only an Acting Minister for Transport, Mr Donoghue, his Department and the TII need to immediately act on Tipperary County Councils application for funding so the bridge in Ardfinnan can be preserved, protected and restored to full use,” concluded Cllr. Lonergan.
