Review of the Council's Commercial Incentive Scheme

Fianna Fàil General election candidate Cllr. Siobhàn Ambrose has welcomed the completion of the Economic Spc's review of the Commercial Incentive Scheme which will be brought before this morning's Council meeting for approval by the full Council. Cllr. Ambrose who is a member of this review committee said that this specific scheme covers new businesses only and means that for the first time first floor properties in addition to ground floor properties will also be included under the revised scheme subject to the appropriate criteria and planning conditions. The main points of the scheme are that in the first year a recipient will get 75 per cent off their commercial rates. In the second year a reduction of 50 per cent and in the third year 25 per cent off their commercial rates. According to Cllr. Ambrose while this scheme has always been open to ground floor use she believes that the expansion of the scheme now to also include first floor premises will hopefully see an increase in the number of vacant first floor premises in our town and village centres being occupied by perspective businesses. Cllr. Ambrose pointed out that businesses in our towns and villages have had a turbulent few years and while welcoming the completion of this scheme Cllr Ambrose has asked that the committee now be given permission to look at a new scheme specifically targeting supports for existing businesses.
