The 17th Triennial International Butler Gathering

The 17th Triennial International Butler Gathering will take place at KILKENNY from 18-23 AUGUST 2015. The gathering, which takes place every three years, is open to all who are interested in the Butler heritage, not only those who have the Butler surname in their ancestry. The Butler Society was founded in 1967 and will celebrate its Golden Jubilee with special events through 2017, for which planning is already underway. The proceedings of the Society, along with many articles of interest submitted by members and non-members alike over the years, have been published in twenty-three editions of Journal of The Butler Society to date, a publication which issues every second year on average.

The 2015 Rally will commence on Tuesday evening, August 18, with registration of attendees and a reception at Kilkenny Castle. Day excursions throughout the south-east take place from the next day: Wednesday, August 19 sees a private tour of Carlow Museum and Gallery, followed by lunch at Lisnavagh, the seat of Lord and Lady Rathdonnell, Near Rathvilly, Co. Carlow. That evening features The Lord Dunboyne Memorial Lecture and Reception, in the Picture Gallery at Kilkenny Castle.

Thursday August 20, the coaches depart Kilkenny for Borris House, seat of the MacMorrough-Kavanagh family, at Borris, Co. Carlow. Talks will be given on the history of Borris House and its collection of portraits, followed by lunch. The afternoon will involve tours of the nearby medieval Old Leighlin cathedral, followed by a reception at Maidenhall, near Kilkenny, the home of the late Hubert Butler, co-founder of The Butler Society.

Friday August 21 is the South Tipperary day, with lectures at Old St Mary's Church, Clonmel on The Butler Heritage and town walls of Clonmel and Carrick-on-Suir, followed by a private tour of Bulmer's Cider Factory. Lunch will be at Kilcash, an ancient seat of the Butler family, followed by a talk on the restoration progress of Kilcash Castle.

On Saturday August 22, The Hubert Butler Memorial Lecture will be given by the American vice-president of the society, genealogist Craig Foster, who is visiting from Salt Lake City, Utah. He will talk on the digitisation of The Dunboyne Collection of Papers, following which there will be an Open Forum and lunch at a Kilkenny Restaurant. That evening, the Gala Reception in The Picture Gallery of Kilkenny Castle - featuring a talk by Sir Charles Ponsonby, Baronet - will be followed by the Black Tie Society Dinner in The Parade Tower. The 17th Triennial International Butler Rally will conclude on Sunday August 23 with service in St Canice's Cathedral, Kilkenny, followed by lunch in The Parade Tower, Kilkenny Castle.

The Rally Programme of Events, which may be attended in full or on selected days (daily rates apply) may be booked online at http://www.butler-soc.org/index.php/rally/rally-bookings or by emailing the Society Treasurer, Mark Reade, treasurer@butler-soc.org
