Closing date for SUSI applications fast approaching

Closing date for SUSI applications fast approaching Cllr. Martin Lonergan

Independent Tipperary County Councillor for Clonmel/Cahir Borough District, Martin Lonergan has advised students who have yet to apply for grant aid for the 2015/16 academic year online to do so prior to the closing date for new applications which is 1st August, 2015.

The SUSI online Student Grant Application System for the 2015/2016 academic year has been open since April. The national student grant awarding body, SUSI (Student Universal Support Ireland), has advised that the closing date for new applications will be the 1st of August.

I would encourage students who have yet to apply to visit the SUSI website to review the eligibility criteria for student grant funding.

Applicants this year have been advised that the scheme will expand the number of payments that are not taken into account in accessing eligibility for a grant. These will include rent supplement and Housing Assistance Payments, the new Water Conservation Grant and mortgage interest supplement. There is now a greater alignment in how SUSI and the Department of Social Protection calculate reckonable income. This has been a very welcome development and one that simplifies applications for those students most in need.

From 2015/16, students will now receive four months maintenance before the end of December, instead of three. The balance of five months payments will be made the following year. This change should help to alleviate the pressures that some students experience in the first semester, according to Cllr. Lonergan.

I would encourage students to visit the SUSI website, www.susi.ie, and review the eligibility criteria for student grant funding prior to making you application. There is an online grant eligibility reckoner that enables students to answer a short set of questions following which they will be given an indication as to their eligibility for student grant funding. Applications are made through the SUSI website and I would encourage students to submit their applications prior to the closing date of 1st August, concluded Cllr. Lonergan.
