COMMUNITIES URGED TO ESTABLISH TEXT ALERT AREAS - MARTIN LONERGAN

Independent Local Election Candidate for the Cahir/Clonmel Area and Board Member of Muintir na T?re, Martin Lonergan, has urged Community groups in Tipperary to establish a Community Text Alert in their respective communities.

Mr Lonergan?s call comes after the launch of his local Community Text Alert Initiative last week.

?With the backdrop of rising rural crime rates and the impending closure of some rural Garda Stations, communities need to empower themselves to protect and preserve their way of life. In response to this, Muintir na T?re in partnership with An Garda Siochana, have developed and agreed on a crime prevention programme that is been rolled out nationally,? according to Mr Lonergan.

?This is a good news story for both rural and urban areas. The emergence of a respected Community Text Alert underpinned by a solid active Community Alert group within each community, will lead to greater participation of Communities to become the eyes and ears of the Garda Siochana making it unwelcome territory for criminals. It will provide An Garda Siochana with the means to instantly alert registered mobile numbers within an area of suspicious activity and afford members of the community the vehicle to inform their local 24 hour Garda station of same.?
