Tora-Kan karate club Ballyporeen - Club Of The Year - 3 Years In A Row

The National karate championships were recently held in Moyle Rover's sports complex just outside Clonmel, with some remarkable results for a local club.

Tora-Kan karate club in Ballyporeen won the national club of the year for the third year in a row! This is a first for any club in the country, and a very proud moment for all concerned. There were many notable medal winners, and too many to mention here, but there are 4 x new All-Ireland champions now from Ballyporeen! Cori Slattery won the U10 boys Kumite title (and incidentally came second in the kata section), Emma Ryan winning the U12 girls kumite and Adam Whitney winning the U16 boys kumite title! The club also won the national junior team kata event with Jonathan McCarthy, Adam Whitney and Abbie Brett. And Dillon Brett winning the boys <18 Kata title.

There were many runner up and third places too, but one to mention in particular was Sean Corbett, who unfortunately lost in the final of the senior men's kumite. Sean was the national champion from last year and to get to two finals in a row is a massive achievement in itself! Sean is only 20 years of age and has a bright future ahead of him.

This year also seen several members of the club passing referee examinations and supporting the event on an administration basis too. This is crucial to the development of the club, as it gives a better insight into how the rules work and what is expected from you to achieve your goal. Later this year, a senior member of the club, will be refereeing in the world championship in Prague CZ, as part of the Irish administration.

Finally, club instructor Sensei Kevin Sullivan, would like to convey his pride and honour to be instructing such a dedicated and hard working club, and that he gets more enjoyment out of seeing the club's success than anything he himself has won in the past! He clearly understands the sacrifice and effort required to get to this level, and looks forward to many more years of national club domination!

Well done all!!!
