€168,818 in roads funding for Local Improvements Schemes in Tipperary

Tipperary Fine Gael General Election candidate Mary Newman Julian has welcomed confirmation from Minister Michael Ring that over €168,818 is to be allocated to Tipperary County Council under the Locals Improvement Scheme.

Welcoming the allocation, Mrs. Newman Julian said, “The LIS funds improvements to non-public rural roads such as the lanes and boreens that enable people to access their homes and farms. These roads are not under the normal maintenance of the Local Authorities but are a vital artery for people living in rural areas. This brings to €20 million, the amount allocated to the Scheme in 2018. Over €37 million has been allocated towards the scheme since Minister Ring re-introduced it last year. This scheme is a lifeline for people living in rural areas because it directly improves their access to and from their homes and farms. Many people living in rural areas use these roads on every journey they take, so when these roads fall into disrepair, it has a significant impact on them. The upkeep of these roads is a priority for people who live in rural Ireland. By investing in the improvement of these roads the Government is helping to improve people's quality of life in rural areas. The scheme has been a massive success last year as it addressed an issue for which there is significant demand for support. There was no dedicated funding for the LIS for a number of years, so there is significant built-up demand for investment in these roads.”

“Individual Local Authorities are responsible for identifying and prioritising roads for improvement works under the scheme. This is the second round of funding under the LIS in 2018. The first round was in March of this year.”

“Tipperary County Council were asked in March compile a secondary list of roads on which works could be carried out if further funding became available during the year.”
